Internal Family Systems is a therapeutic approach that recognizes that we all have different parts within us, parts that carry emotions, beliefs, memories, and ways of responding that have developed throughout our lives. Some parts may work hard to protect us, while others carry experiences of hurt, fear, shame, or vulnerability.

Rather than trying to get rid of difficult thoughts, feelings, or behaviors, IFS invites us to approach these parts with curiosity and compassion. Even the parts of ourselves we struggle with often developed for a reason and have been working, in their own way, to protect us.

Internal Family Systems

At the heart of IFS is the understanding that beneath these different parts is Self—an inherent source of compassion, curiosity, clarity, courage, and connection. The work isn't about becoming someone different, but creating enough space for this deeper inner wisdom to emerge and for our parts to feel heard, understood, supported, and integrated.

IFS can be at the heart of our work together or integrated alongside other approaches, depending on what feels most supportive to you. I bring IFS into our work as a way of slowing down and becoming curious about what is happening beneath the surface. We might notice which parts are present in a particular moment, explore what they are trying to communicate or protect, and gently deepen the relationship between these parts and Self. There is no expectation to arrive already knowing your parts or understanding IFS. The process can unfold organically, at a pace that feels right.

“Internal Family Systems is the inevitable moment of softening when a part meets Self-energy.”— Robyn Dickson
